on romney's speech, releasing a new ad, reminding voters of the republican candidate's gaffe-plagued foreign trip over the summer. romney, obama aides say, is no ronald reagan, more like chevy chase. combatting that image, romney met with a group of retired generals after a speech. the romney approach would be both more muscular and bipartisan. >> if you look at harry truman and john kennedy and the use of power by bill clinton in his second term, that is a much different approach than jimmy carter and barack obama. >> reporter: to put his vision into action, romney will have to win first, which explains why he made an impromptu stop at a nearby elementary school. at this stage of the race, the pictures matter almost as much as the policies. romney did mention the obama campaign's trump card on foreign policy, the killing of osama bin laden, but he seemed to give the credit to what he called, quote, military and intelligence professionals. romney will now shift back to the economy with campaign events coming up here in virginia and also in iowa and ohio. wolf? >> jim acosta, thank you. let's

know, if you would have lisped that speech, you would assume atmospherically that romney had very strong disagreements with the obama administration, but his problem is that obama has run a foreign policy almost like a moderate republican. it's been internationalist, and not too liberal in temz of the human rights oriented. the syrian issue is the one place romney can find to make a distinction. as you point out, it's a very difficult policy to enact. the syrian insurgency is really an uprising of 100 armed militias all over syria that are not particularly well connected to one another. >> you wouldn't understand the goals of the people you are arming, and there is a danger that some of this would blow back in just a way in the afghan skas where the people we armed turn into terrorists. >> it sounded me like he is saying we should allow the saudis and the qatarese to provide more assistance. not arm them ourselves. sdhoo romney implied that the administration was being deceptive, trying to convince us that the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi was a random response to the f

. that's what i talked about. a lot of mitt romney, you know, i've listened to a lot of his speeches. he talks about the same thing. this is a foundational election. this is an election about what we are. well, who are we, and i think that's why i put this book out there, talking about who we are as americans, because barack obama has a different vision than our founders' vision of what america is to be, and that's fine. he wants to transform america, but from what to what, and this book answers the question from what, a country that believes in our founding documents of god-given rights and limited government and free people being able to form families and communities and build a great america from the bottom up as opposed to president obama's view which is, no. you know, we can't do that anymore. it's not fair. we need the government to make those decisions and allocate resources and opportunity, not the people. so i think more of that talk, and i think, again, if you listen to romney's speeches, he does talk about those things, but we're trying to reinforce that out among the grass ro

found it quite shocking to see governor romney in a speech with edelson in the front row taking a position about the middle east that, to say the least, will box him in in a way that presidents don't usually want to be boxed in on foreign policy. it was a rather tight commitment that mitt romney made with a donor nodding in the front row. i was troubled by that as if he makes a commitment to end investigations against edelson. i had an argument with mine, is he more interested in destroying unions or supporting, you know, he has other priorities as well. i don't think it matters. i don't think the rules have to be that clear. the rules are you want to create a structure where elected officials are not wholly dependent on a given -- not largely dependent on a given donor. one of the principles i always use is you want them to be in a situation where if they're in office and that donor comes back and says i really want x, y, z, the elected official can say, as senator mccain famously did, get out of my office. and if you can't because that money is fundamentally important to your

but what exactly mitt romney would do as president. he didn't do that in his connection speech. the other thing that's odd about romney's campaign right now is he has a upside down favorability. more voters are saying they have an unfavorable view of him than a favorable one. he's got to find a way to fix that. and frankly debates are not traditionally a great form to do that. debates have helped candidates like ronald reagan in 1980, or even barack obama in 2008. when the question was, is this new guy up to the job? people think romney's up to the job, they just have this other set of questions about him. so he's got to do something about likability. not easy to do. finally, he needs to get past this comment he made that obama has just been hammering on him. hammering him on. the fact that, you know -- >> 47%? >> 47% of the electorate is dependent on government, won't vote for him. he needs to find a way to explain that and get past it. that's a lot of homework for one debate. >> that is a lot. maybe too heavy of a lift. some people might say it's going to be very tough. president obama,
